A liquor distribution centre in Mkhuhlu, outside Hazyview, was reportedly attacked by four armed men demanding cash and cigarettes on Friday 9 May 2025.
A statement by Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane, has revealed that a victim(complainant)was pointed with a firearm, by one of the suspects, and forced into the shop where the employees were held hostage. Lt-Col Ndubane said three other suspects were already inside the shop.
“ The employees were forced to load the stock into the complainant’s bakkie. Calcutta police and private security teams responded swiftly, and a shootout ensued. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. All four suspects were apprehended at the scene,” said Lt-Col Ndubane.

Three firearms(two pistols and a rifle)were reportedly recovered and the suspects were charged with business robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as attempted murder. Lt-Col Ndubane said additional charges may be added as investigations continue.

“ The suspects are expected to appear before the Calcutta Magistrate’s Court on Monday 12 May 2025. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS(South African Police Service)in Mpumalanga, Major General(Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the police officers and private security personnel for their quick and effective response,” said Lt-Col Ndubane.
