Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison(DCSSL)-Vusi Shongwe, alongside Minister of Transport-Sindisiwe Chikunga, launched the National Easter Road Safety Campaign in Mkhondo on Wednesday 20 March.

Traditional healers and religious leaders were also invited to conduct rituals and prayers at two spots whereby crashes usually occur along the N2 Road.

Speaking at the event, Shongwe pleaded with road users, particularly truck drivers, to adhere to rules of the road and the need to exercise patience.

“ There are more vehicles on the road during the Easter holidays. Some truck drivers don’t respect the rules of the road and this causes unnecessary accidents. We are pleading with the police to observe such behaviour on the road.

“ We must all question our behaviour on the road as road users. As road users, we must not forget about pedestrians. We must respect each other so that we reach our respective destinations safely,” said Shongwe.

A roadblock was conducted in which Shongwe and Chikunga interacted with motorists to spread the message of road safety and vigilance, as the long Easter weekend approaches.

The event was concluded at the Mandla Magudulela Stadium in Thandukukhanya, whereby Shongwe and Chikunga met the community of Mkhondo to call upon community members to play their part in ensuring that road safety is upheld.

The event was supported by other senior Mpumalanga government officials such as the Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of Road Traffic Management Corporation(RTMC), Makhosini Msibi, amongst others.
