A storage warehouse at Skukuza in the Kruger National Park was gutted by fire in the late hours of Saturday, 18 July 2026, SANParks(South African National Parks) has confirmed.

According to SANParks Head of Communications and Spokesperson, JP Louw, the warehouse is located far from all tourism accommodation and administrative offices.

“The warehouse in question is situated a considerable distance from all tourism accommodation and administrative offices. As such, there was no immediate risk to guests or core operational facilities, and no injuries have been reported,” said Louw.

The warehouse reportedly stored critical infrastructure and maintenance stock for the park. Items destroyed include; spare generators, geysers, substantial quantities of electrical cabling, and other essential maintenance equipment.

SANParks warned that the loss could disrupt some day-to-day upkeep in the short term.

“The loss of these assets may have a short-term effect on certain maintenance operations within the park. SANParks is committed to restoring affected operations as swiftly as possible and will provide further updates as verified information becomes available,” said Louw.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Emergency and technical teams were reportedly dispatched to the scene overnight to contain the blaze and secure the area.

“At this stage, the cause of the fire remains undetermined. A full investigation is underway, with relevant emergency and technical teams on site to assess the extent of the damage,” Louw added.

Tourism activities at Skukuza and across the rest of Kruger National Park are said to continue as normal. No guests or staff were reportedly affected by the incident.

SANParks said it will issue further updates once the investigation and damage assessment are complete
