Community members of Magogeni and surrounding areas, under Nkomazi Local Municipality, recently joined the Mhlaba Traditional Council for the annual cultural celebrations hosted by Inkosi SH Mkhathswa.
According to Mpumalanga COGHSTA(Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs), the festivities and celebrations drew the presence of dignitaries including; Chairperson for Mpumalanga House of Traditional and Kho-San Leaders, Kgoshi Lameck Mokoena, traditional leadership, government dignitaries.
The event reportedly aimed to honour cultural traditions, heritage, and to engage on developmental issues affecting the area.
COGHSTA said Traditional leadership in South Africa is a constitutionally entrenched system of governance that operates alongside modern democratic institutions to manage the cultural, social, and administrative affairs of millions of rural South Africans.
“ Recognizing indigenous customs, Chapter 12 of the South African Constitution formally validates the status, roles, and structures of traditional authorities under customary law.
“ The system acts as a crucial intermediary link between local communities and the state, balancing centuries-old hereditary succession with contemporary statutory regulations,” said COGHSTA.
The day featured traditional dance, music, attire and rituals that showcase the rich heritage of the Mhlaba community, alongside discussions on service delivery, youth development and economic opportunities in Nkomazi Local Municipality.
Community members said the event strengthens social cohesion and ensures that younger generations remain connected to their roots while also engaging with modern development priorities.
