In response to the torching of 9 trucks at Watervalboven on the N4 toll road and Ermelo/Piet Retief on the N2 this week, MEC for the department of community safety, security and liaison (DCSSL) in Mpumalanga, Vusi Shongwe, said that the security cluster and all role players have been called to work around the clock to bring the perpetrators to book.
Shongwe has vehemently condemned the incidents and called upon members of the public and trucking industry to provide any valuable information that may assist the police in arresting the culprits.
” Although we don’t know whether the two cases are related or not, they are causing the country great damage and this, in our view, constitutes to economic sabotage. The trucking industry plays an important role in the development of our economy and sustenance of livelihoods,” said Shongwe.
The MEC has lamented the targeting of trucks by community members during protests, which he said is very worrisome.
” They(community members) often blockade the roads using trucks and this has placed many truck drivers’ lives in danger,” said Shongwe.
