The police in Calcutta, in partnership with other law enforcement agencies, acted swiftly to recover goods reportedly stolen following an attack on a courier vehicle at Shabalala, next to Hazyview, on Tuesday. An unlicensed firearm and the vehicle allegedly used in the robbery were also recovered by the police.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson, brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said that four suspects robbed the courier vehicle driver and his crew of electronic equipments, mobile phones, decoders, USB cables and other items. The stolen items were reportedly offloaded from the courier vehicle into the vehicle used by the suspects.

” It is reported that a Suzuki Ertiga, which matched the description of the vehicle which was used in the robbery, was spotted at Tsemamarhumbu Trust in Culcutta. As members signalled for it’s driver to stop, all four occupants are said to have jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot to evade arrest. They somehow abandoned the vehicle they were using,” said Mohlala.

He added that a Norinco pistol, with its serial number filed off, was discovered amongst the stolen items inside the getaway car.

” The vehicle was confiscated for further probe. Part of the investigation will also focus on locating the owner of the vehicle. Preliminary investigation does not indicate anything with regard to the vehicle being reported stolen,” said Mohlala.

Mohlala urged anyone with information to contact the police.
