Disruptions and extortion-related activities affecting infrastructure projects are said to be a significant concern in Mpumalanga, and the provincial government is taking a firm and collective step to fight the challenge.

Challenges reportedly continue at various project sites, including significant disruptions, intimidation, unlawful demands, and project delays arising from the activities of criminal elements.

A strategic engagement was reportedly held between the Acting Provincial Commisioner for SAPS (South African Police Service), Major-General (Dr)Zeph Mkhwanazi, MEC for DPWRT (Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport), Thulasizwe Thomo, as well as MEC for DCSSL (Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison), Jackie Macie, to find solutions.

DPWRT said the meeting sought to strengthen intergovernmental collaboration, enhance coordination between law enforcement and departments, and develop practical interventions to address these challenges.

Additionally, DPWRT said these actions have a detrimental impact on project delivery, contractual performance, construction schedules, and ultimately the provision of public infrastructure and services to communities.

“ We are pleased with the positive outcomes of the engagement and the collective commitment demonstrated by all stakeholders. The Department remains committed to working closely with law enforcement to prevent disruptions, combat extortion and create an enabling environment for the successful implementation of infrastructure projects,” said DPWRT.
