In a bid to advance the meaningful inclusion of Persons with Disabilities within the EPWP(Expanded Public Works Programme), the Mpumalanga DPWRT(Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport) hosted a landmark PWD(Persons with Disabilities) Framework Workshop, alongside key stakeholders including; the Office of the Premier Disability Desk, SASSA(South African Social Security Agency), National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, as well as local municipalities across the Gert Sibande District.

According to a statement issued by the Mpumalanga DPWRT, the common goal of the workshop was to ensure that PWDs are empowered to fully participate in the EPWP and the opportunities it offers.

The Department said the workshop marks the beginning of the  province’s-wide engagement programme aimed at strengthening disability inclusion across districts. The workshop is aimed to continue in the Nkangala District, and conclude in the City of Mbombela.

“ While significant strides have been made in expanding access to work opportunities, the workshop acknowledged that Persons with Disabilities remain underrepresented in the programme.

“ Challenges such as unmet targets, incomplete disability declarations, inconsistent reporting, and coordination gaps across government structures continue to hinder progress,” said DPWRT.

The Department said a number of key resolutions were adopted including; the redesign of projects to better accommodate the needs and capabilities of Persons with Disabilities, the integration of transversal officials into recruitment processes, and the rollout of awareness campaigns through SASSA-supported radio platforms to reach communities more effectively.

DPWRT said it is committed to strengthening accountability measures by engaging Municipal Managers and Executive Mayors directly on PWD participation targets.

“ Performance on disability inclusion will also become a standing item at sector and district forum meetings, while excellence in advancing disability inclusion will be recognised through the prestigious Kamoso Awards,” said DPWRT.
