Rob Ferreira Hospital in Mbombela has marked a major milestone in Mpumalanga’s fight against cervical cancer, conducting 50 screening and treatment procedures as part of a provincial initiative to strengthen prevention and treatment services.
The procedures included Colposcopy, LLETZ, VIA, and Thermal Ablation. The effort reportedly forms part of a broader provincial push to expand access to cervical cancer care and build clinical capacity across Mpumalanga.
Mpumalanga Department of Health said the programme was supported through virtual training and mentorship led by Dr B. Magagula, enhancing the skills of doctors from across the province.

“According to William Mntambo, Provincial Manager for Women’s Health, the initiative promotes critical skills transfer and strengthens the province’s response to cervical cancer.
“ This achievement contributes towards the WHO(World Health Organization)90-70-90 targets for eliminating cervical cancer by 2030, which aim to ensure that 90% of girls are vaccinated against HPV, 70% of women are screened for cervical cancer, and 90% of women diagnosed with cervical disease receive appropriate treatment,” said the Department of Health.
The initiative reportedly demonstrates Mpumalanga’s commitment to improving women’s health outcomes through expanded access to screening and treatment services.
