Police reportedly interrupted a looting spree by a group of people who targeted a goods train transporting chrome on the railway line between Dullstroom and Belfast on Wednesday.
Provincial police spokesperson in Mpumalanga, brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said that the swift action by police came as a result of a tip-off from a company called Eastern Chrome Mine Samancor, which reported the incident as it was taking place.
” About 80 looters who where at the vicinity, carrying bags filled with chrome, are said to have fled to different directions when they realised that police were coming. The alleged looters reportedly disappeared into the bushes. The members reportedly found the chrome-filled bags and these items were scattered as well as abandoned on the ground,” he said.
According to Mohlala, no case was opened, but the train has left the scene and is at a safer place.
