A local professional nurse, Octavia Happy Sambo(57), was allegedly shot and killed by her 50-year-old boyfriend at Mgcobaneni in Masoyi on 29 May 2025, following a heated argument.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane, the incident occurred around 18:30 and left the community in shock.
“ The victim reportedly ran from the suspect and attempted to hide in the neighbour’s bathroom. The suspect followed her and fatally shot her. The victim died at the scene,” said Lt-Col Ndubane.
The victim was reportedly found in a pool of blood and certified dead by the EMS(Emergency Medical Service) personnel who were called to the scene, alongside the police, by concerned community members. Lt-Col Ndubane said the suspect was found later at the residence where he lived together with the deceased.
“ He was arrested and charged with murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of ammunition. The firearm believed to have been used in the crime was recovered and confiscated. The suspect is expected to appear before the Masoyi Periodical Court on Monday 2 June 2025,” said Lt-Col Ndubane.
Mpumalanga Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major-General(Dr)Zeph Mkhwanazi, has condemned the continued violence against women.
“ We cannot allow this to become normal. Women should feel safe, especially in their homes and relationships. I urge anyone facing difficulties in their relationships to seek help from professionals or relevant support structures before it ends in tragedy,” said Major-General Mkhwanazi.
