The Calcutta Regional Court has sentenced Nombango Claudia Mogiba after she was found guilty of possession of stolen Eskom cables. Mogiba was reportedly arrested at Calcutta in Mkhuhlu on 28 January 2024 during a search and seizure operation conducted by the Hawks in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies.

Mpumalanga spokesperson for the Hawks, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said information was received about copper cables that were spotted at Mogiba’s residence. She said the search was conducted in Mogiba’s presence whereby a roll of suspected Eskom aluminium cables, covered with a black sail, were spotted next to the house.
“ Other small rolls of suspected Eskom cables were further identified in a trench next to the wall covered with a black Transnet sail. Eskom security were summoned and confirmed that the properties belongs to Eskom. The team continued with the search whereby lots of aluminium pots were found in the room and identified as manufactured by smelting Eskom copper cables with estimated value of R30 800,00,” said Sekgotodi.

She said the Mogiba has made several court appearances following her arrest and was granted bail on 2 February 2024.
“ The accused appeared at the Calcutta Regional Court on Thursday 21 November 2024 and she was sentenced to R10 000 fine or 5 years suspended for 5 years,” said Sekgotodi.
