One suspect was shot and killed, while another suspect was injured during a shootout that ensued when members of the Ehlanzeni Anti-Hijack Task Team foiled an alleged business robbery at T & Sons Supermarket, in Kanyamazane, on Tuesday 7 October 2025.
Three other suspects reportedly managed to escape in a white Kia vehicle which did not have any number plates.
Speaking on behalf of the police in Mpumalanga, Colonel Fundiswa Maphanga said the police where conducting their operations when they received information about the suspicious white Kia that was driving around the said business premises.
Colonel Maphanga said the police members responded swiftly and approached the scene after being tipped-off about a robbery in progress at the supermarket.
“ Upon seeing the police, the suspects allegedly opened fire at the police and a shootout ensued.One firearm was recovered at the scene, and cases of business robbery as well as possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition have been opened.

“ All role players, including Emergency Services, Forensics, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, attended the scene. The police are continuing with the search for the remaining suspects,” said Colonel Maphanga.
The Acting Mpumalanga Provincial Police Commissioner, Major-General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has commended the team for their swift intervention.
“The members displayed exceptional bravery and restraint under fire. Their quick response prevented harm to community members and business owners. We will not allow armed criminals to terrorise our communities,” said Major General Mkhwanazi.
