The rotary was still cloaked in early morning mist when the head-on collision happened. By the time the sun burned it off, 10 families were facing a different kind of darkness.

Around 05h15 on Thursday 21 May 2026, a minibus taxi travelling from Morgenzon to Standerton reportedly collided with a bus headed in the opposite direction on the R39 Road.

According to the spokesperson for Mpumalanga DCSSL(Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison), Moeti Mmusi, all 10 people who died were in the taxi, including the driver.

Eight passengers reportedly died at the scene, one passed away in the ambulance, while another died later at a hospital in Standerton.

“ The bus driver sustained minor injuries. One passenger in the bus escaped unharmed. Reports indicate that the road was misty at the time of the crash, which may have reduced visibility. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out at this stage,” said Mmusi.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie, extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
