Education MEC in Mpumalanga, Bonakele Majuba, has urged learners to make the most of the winter vacation classes, which are currently conducted by the department in its attempt to ensure that learners improve their performance in the 2023 national senior certificate(NSC) examinations.
The department has reported that the classes will be held from 26 June to 07 July, at 115 day centres and 11 residential camps for 167 schools that have obtained below 70% pass rate in the 2022 Matric Results throughout the province.
The subjects that are targeted are; mathematics, mathematics literacy, physical sciences, life sciences, economics, accounting, business studies, history, geography, agricultural science and english first additional language, which are all high enrolment subjects.
The best performing teachers have been selected to teach at the vacation classes and each learner will reportedly take a maximum of three subjects. Residential camps will include selected best performing learners in mathematics, physical sciences and accounting.
” We are committed to provide our learners with the best possible support to enable them to improve their performance and to realise their potential.
” These vacation classes will give our learners the opportunity to catch up on any missed learning and to prepare for the upcoming NSC examinations,” said Majuba.
The department has called upon all learners who are eligible to attend the vacation to make use of this opportunity.
The MEC visited Thomas Nhlabathi secondary school at Embalenhle in Secunda on Tuesday, as part of monitoring the classes and he was satisfied with the quality of learning and teaching taking place.
He said that the department is certain that the winter classes add impetus in the effort to motivate learners and will boost their performance both qualitively and quantitatively. The MEC added that all learners must take advantage of the time at their disposal to push towards passing their grades in 2023.
The department said that all learners will be provided with nutrition in the 167 schools and scholar transport will also be available where there is a need.
