A 35-year-old murder suspect was arrested, while alleged counterfeit and illicit goods valued at over R600 000 were confiscated during a multi-disciplinary Operation Basadi led by Ehlanzeni District Commissioner, Major-General Dorah Xaba, in Ehlanzeni District on Wednesday 20 August 2026.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Mavela Masondo, said the operation focused on a roadblock on the N4 Road near the Nkomazi Toll Plaza, aimed at tracing wanted suspects, and raiding shops suspected of trading in counterfeit and illicit goods.
“The suspect is said to have been evading arrest for 11 years. He is suspected to be involved in the murder of Mduduzi Nkuna, who was reportedly stabbed and killed at Block B, Tonga, in the Nkomazi area on 24 May 2015,” said Colonel Masondo.
He furthermore stated that 13 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested at the roadblock while Traffic fines to the value of about R76 400.00 were issued to motorists for contravention of the National Road Traffic Act.

“ It was during this period when a total of 438 items of illicit and counterfeit goods to the value of about R619 960.00 were seized as part of the operation. Items seized included cosmetics, cell phone accessories, watches, toys and cigarettes,” said Colonel Masondo.

Mpumalanga Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Apaphia Modise, commended the commitment shown by the female Law Enforcement Officers during the Women’s Month.
Major-General Modise said Operation Basadi proves that great results to boost public confidence from communities will be achieved when women in policing lead with determination.
“I thank my female colleagues and all our partners for their collaboration. Operation Basadi will continue during this month of August in order to enhance visibility, strengthen crime prevention and ensure safety of all communities in Mpumalanga,” said Major-General Modise.

The operation was reportedly conducted in partnership with various stakeholders, including Traffic Officials, SARS (South African Revenue Service) Customs, Department of Home Affairs, EMA (Emergency Medical Services), vehicle tracking companies and private security personnel.
