A truck that was reportedly carrying luggage estimated around R2 million was recovered by police 40 minutes after it was hijacked. According to police report, the incident took place at Kamhlushwa, near Tonga, on Monday 16 October.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said that the truck was travelling from Mbombela to Kamhlushwa.
” The truck driver and crew alleged that a silver Toyota Etios overtook them then stopped right in front of the truck, obstructing them from driving further. Two armed men alighted the Toyota Etios and immediately attacked the driver.
” The two victims alighted, leaving behind their cell phones inside the truck. The suspect are said to have fled the scene with the truck,” said Mdhluli.
He added that the victims were able to alert the police with the assistance of good Samaritans. According to Mdhluli, the truck was later spotted driving at high speed by Tonga police.
” The truck was followed and when the suspects realised that they were being pursued, they stopped the truck, alighted then took on foot before disappearing into nearby bushes,” said Mdhluli.
