A police investigation has been launched following the death of a security guard who was allegedly shot and killed during a robbery that took placed at a petrol station, in Greylingstad, in the early hours of Thursday 29 May 2025.
Speaking for the police in Mpumalanga, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said the employees at the petrol station were reportedly held hostage after a group of 15 heavily armed suspects, wearing masks and gloves, stormed into the premises at around 01h15 am.
According to Brigadier Mdhluli, the suspects went straight to the drop safe and accessed some cash after detonating some explosives. The suspects reportedly fled the scene with an undisclosedĀ amount of cash.

ā€œ During this incident, multiple shots were fired indiscriminately, tragically leading to the fatal injury of one of the two security guards who were patrolling along the nearby railway line at the time. Fortunately, the second guard managed to escape unharmed,ā€ said Brigadier Mdhluli.
He said a security vehicle was also attacked with a hail of bullets, but the driver managed to drive away in the midst of heavy gunfire.
Mpumalanga Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major-General(Dr)Zeph Mkhwanazi, said a manhunt led by a team of specialised investigators is underway.
ā€œ We will hunt down these suspects, and we will not rest until we arrest the perpetrators of this heinous crime. The safety of our communities is paramount, and we are committed to bringing those responsible to justice,ā€ said Major-General Mkhwanazi.
Brigadier Mdhluli said the suspects are still at large, and he urged anyone with information that could assist in the investigation, to contact the CRIME STOP number on 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP.
ā€œ All received information will be treated with utmost confidentiality, and callers may remain anonymous,ā€ said Brigadier Mdhluli.
