Mpumalanga MEC for DCSSL(Community Safety, Security and Liaison), Jackie Macie, delivered a keynote address at the handover ceremony of 74 SAPS(South African Police Service) vehicles to Mpumalanga police stations.

The handover ceremony was held in Middelburg, Nkangala District, on Wednesday aimed to enhance the capabilities of the police force and improve community safety.

In his address, MEC Macie emphasised the importance of partnership between the SAPS and the community in the fight against crime. He urged the community to work hand-in-hand with police officers, provide information, and report suspicious activities.

MEC Macie also acknowledged the significance of community policing, encouraging community structures to remain vigilant and collaborate with the SAPS to prevent crime and maintain peace.

The handover of SAPS vehicles is expected to boost police visibility and accessibility in the province. MEC Macie expressed gratitude to the SAPS and key stakeholders for their tireless efforts in reducing crime levels.

“ Today we hand over these vital resources to enhance the capabilities of our police force and enable them to serve our people more effectively. These vehicles are not merely tools for transportation, they are instruments of protection, empowering our police officers to respond swiftly and decisively to emergencies, combat crime, and ensure the safety of citizens,” said MEC Macie.

However, MEC Macie noted that more needs to be done, particularly in addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

He emphasised the importance of utilising available resources effectively to combat crime, especially in rural areas.

“ All criminals who hijack vehicles, murder people, and perpetrators of all forms of contact crimes must be thrown with lethal flowers. Our communities are tired of reading statistics of their innocent relatives who perish at the hands of criminals,” Macie emphasised.

The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major-General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, said the handover of the vehicles is a clear signal that the outcry of communities has been heard. He said the new fleet will address frustrations of Mpumalanga residents about the lack of vehicles at their local police stations.

“This event marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to improve the operational capacity of our police force and enhance our ability to serve and protect the community.

“It I s unacceptable for anyone to be denied or delayed of essential services due to a shortage of resources, and we are committed to addressing this issue head-on,” said General Mkhwanazi.

In conclusion, MEC Macie reiterated his commitment to supporting the SAPS and championing the fight against crime. He encouraged the SAPS to utilise the new resources effectively and make a positive impact in the community.
