“ We are deeply saddened by the report of this tragic incident”.

These were the words of Mpumalanga Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major-General(Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, following a domestic violence incident which reportedly took place at Kabokweni on Tuesday 6 August, whereby a husband allegedly shot his wife to death before turning the gun on himself.

In a statement issued by the Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, police and emergency services personnel were called to the scene, and it appears that both individuals died as a result of the incident.

According to Major-General Mkhwanazi, the tragedy clearly signals the urgent need for awareness, prevention and support for those impacted by such incidents.

“ We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking incident. Domestic violence is an issue that affects individuals and communities globally, and we urge anyone who may be experiencing or aware of domestic violence to seek help.

“ There are numerous resources and support systems available, including our Crime Stop number 08600 10111 and Victim Friendly Facilities in our Police Station across the province, that can provide assistance and guidance,” said Mkhwanazi.

Colonel Mdhluli said the South African Police Service(SAPS) in Mpumalanga has organised a Prayer Day on Wednesday 7 August in Ermelo, whereby Faith-Based Organisations will conduct prayers against the scourge of GBVF (Gender-Based Violence and Femicide), as part of efforts to address the challenge.
