Quick coordination between police and a vehicle tracking company reportedly led to the recovery of a hijacked bakkie and the safe rescue of a kidnapped driver in Ehlanzeni this week.

Members of the Provincial Anti-Hijacking Task Team, Ehlanzeni, reportedly received information while on standby regarding a carjacking incident that had occurred in the Kabokweni area, according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe.

“ A white Toyota Hilux bakkie, registered in Mpumalanga, was hijacked at gunpoint in Kabokweni. The driver was also allegedly kidnapped during the incident,” said Captain Nonyane-Mpe.
The information was reportedly operationalised immediately in collaboration with the vehicle tracking company, and tracking coordinates were shared with members involved in the operation.

“ A tracing and tracking operation was conducted, resulting in the successful recovery of the hijacked Toyota Hilux in the Pienaar area, where it had been abandoned in nearby bushes.

“ Further investigations led to the location of the victim in the Thekwane North area. The victim was safely rescued and subsequently taken to Kabokweni SAPS, where a case was opened for further investigation,” Captain Nonyane-Mpe.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the hijacking and kidnapping are reportedly ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this stage.

“Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is urged to contact the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or submit information anonymously via the MySAPSApp. All information received will be treated with the strictest confidentiality,” said Captain Nonyan-Mpe.
