Zanele Mkhonto accused of the murder of police sergeant

A twenty-eight year old woman, Zanele Mkhonto, was remanded in custody by the Mbombela High Court on Wednesday 1 November(this week) for a guilty plea. Mkhonto was reportedly arrested in connection with the murder of Sergeant Mandlenkosi Happy Thwala(45), believed to be her boyfriend, on the evening of 2 August 2022 in Gedlembane, Pienaar.

The matter was reportedly investigated by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit in Nelspruit.

According the spokesperson of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, Mkhonto was linked to the murder, arrested and charged on 10 August 2022. She reportedly appeared at the Kanyamazane magistrate’s court on the same day and was remanded in custody.

” The accused received the services of Legal Aid and battled in court on several occasions to obtain bail. She was denied bail and remained in custody since. The case was postponed to Thursday 2 November 2023 for a guilty plea,” said Sekgotodi.

Hawks Provincial Head, Major General Nicholas Gerber, applauded the investigation officer and the prosecution authorities for their collaboration during the investigation of the case.
