A devastating multiple vehicle collision on the N4 Toll Road, between Karino and Nelsville near Mbombela, has left four people dead and several others injured.
The accident reportedly occurred on Monday morning, 10 February 2025, when a bakkie and two Volkswagen Polo sedans were involved in a head-on collision.
The spokesperson for Mpumalanga DCSSL(Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison), Moeti Mmusi, said one of the two sedans first collided with a bakkie and the other sedan crashed into the two vehicles that had already collided head-on.
“ Four of the deceased were occupants in a sedan that initially collided with the bakkie. The deceased were burnt beyond recognition when the sedan caught fire on impact. The driver of the bakkie sustained serious injuries while the driver of the other sedan escaped with slight injuries. The injured were rushed to the nearby hospital in Mbombela,” said Mmusi.
Mpumalanga DCSSL MEC, Jackie Macie, has called upon all motorists to exercise caution when driving, in order to avoid such deadly occurrences on the roads. Macie also extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
“ Being safe on the road is every driver’s responsibility, therefore, every person must comply with the rules and also exercise caution at all times while driving,” said Macie.
According to Mmusi, an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the deadly incident. He furthermore said that dangerous overtaking cannot be ruled at this stage.
