Several wards, including Day Ward and Paediatric Ward, at Rob Ferreira Hospital in the City of Mbombela are said to have been slightly covered in smoke after a small fire broke out on Tuesday 21 January 2025.
According to Mpumalanga Department of Health spokesperson, Dumisani Malamule, the fire emanated from one of the pipes after a patient allegedly threw a cigarette butt that fell into the wrong place.
“ The Department wants to make a plea to all smoking patients, staff and visitors that they must smoke in designated areas and ensure that they throw their cigarette butts in the right bin,” said Malamule.
The fire department was reportedly called in and the fire was contained.
“ No person or patients were injured as they were evacuated on time. There was not much damage caused except for the burnt pipe. The Department will repair the damage caused by the fire with immediate effect,” Malamule added.
