Old and unused electronic waste such as cellphones, computers, TVās, fridges, washing machines were some of the electrical appliances brought by residents of Mkhuhlu during the recent launch of an e-Waste Recycling pilot project, led by Deputy Minister for DFFE(Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment)-Bernice Swart, Mpumalanga DARDLEA (Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs)MEC-Nompumelelo Hlophe, Deputy Minister of Police-Cassel Mathale.

According to a statement issued by DARDLEA, the launch was aimed at raising awareness and highlight the importance of responsible and sound waste management practices.
The electronic waste collected will reportedly be recycled by EPR Waste Association Of South Africa(eWASA) and E-Waste Recycling Authority(ERA).
ā The previous owners of the appliances will receive vouchers already determined on-site, based on weight and market rates for each type of e-waste they brought,ā said DARDLEA.

A similar launch was also held the at Schensdal Community Hall, in Nkomazi Local Municipality, in which DFFE Deputy Minister Swart commended the local residents for their eagerness to be part of the circular economy by participating in the E-Waste recycling programme.
ā The Deputy Minster(Swart) told the residents that waste is gold and through waste collection many lives will be changed. She also encouraged them to register their businesses with the municipality in order to benefit fully from the programme. She also handed over waste bins, waste bags and trees on the day,ā DARDLEA.
Other dignitaries who attended the launch include, the Executive Mayor of Nkomazi Local Municipality-Phindile Magagula, local Traditional Leaders, Councillors and other senior officials.
According to DARDLEA, the E-Waste recycling programme will also be launched in other provinces.
