An alleged drunk driver was arrested following a multiple vehicle collision, involving two sedans and a truck, which claimed five lives on the N2 Road, between Ermelo and Mkhondo, on Friday 13 June 2025.
The spokesperson for Mpumalanga DCSSL(Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison), Moeti Mmusi, said reports indicate that one of the sedans was allegedly driving at 170kph, which is beyond the speed limit, and collided with another sedan after failing to stop.

“ The driver of the sedan, which had four passengers, seemingly lost control before colliding with the truck. Five people, including the driver of the sedan and four passengers, lost their lives at the scene. The driver of the sedan, who was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash, has been arrested and charged with excessive speeding, failure to stop when ordered by law enforcement, and for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol,” said Mmusi.
The horrific incident caught the attention of DCSSL MEC, Jackie Macie, who extended his condolences to bereaved families, while calling for motorists to be responsible and to obey road regulations in order to avoid the unnecessary loss of lives.
“ Too many tears have been shed already, and too many families have been left devastated by inconsiderate, reckless, and negligent driver-behavior. This needs to stop. All road users must play their part by obeying the rules, to make our roads safer,” said Macie.
Mmusi said investigations into the incident are underway.
