MEC for Mpumalanga DPWRT (Public Works, Roads and Transport), Thulasizwe Thomo, joined traffic officials and police officers at the Middleburg Toll Plaza(N4), on Sunday 4 January 2024, to oversee road safety efforts.
The operation is one of many conducted at key points across Mpumalanga as the festive holiday season comes to a close.
According to DPWRT, law enforcement agencies are gearing up to manage the increased traffic volumes as travellers begin their journeys back home and places of work.
“ With many people returning from their holiday destinations or heading into the province, the Transport Inspectorate is on the ground, monitoring traffic and overseeing the safe movement of public transport,” said DPWRT.

MEC Thomo said; “We continue to urge all public transport operators and road users to drive responsibly, obey traffic laws, and prioritize safety during this busy period”.
Mpumalanga Premier, Mandla Ndlovu, also actively led a separate multi-disciplinary team of traffic officers to enforce compliance to traffic rules.
The Premier embarked on the traffic management operation on the same day(4 Sunday 2026) in which he urged road users to adhere to traffic rules to arrive alive.
Ndlovu has revealed that the Provincial Government has improved the capacity of traffic management by training 104 new officers. He also said that a batch of over hundred young people will be recruited for training in 2026 and the process is in its final stages.
