Illegal mining continues to threaten our economy and community safety.
This is according to Mpumalanga Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major-General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, in his response to a shootout that occurred between alleged illegal miners and police at Simile, Nkanini section, in Sabie on 11 June 2025.
A 30-year-old alleged illegal miner, who is said to be a Mozambican national, reportedly sustained a gunshot wound and was apprehended in the process.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane, members of the Combat Team based in Sabie, received a tip-off from a reliable source about a group of illegal miners who were allegedly refining gold illegally and selling mercury at a specific address in the area.
The police action was reportedly part of Operation Vala Umgodi, which is a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal mining activities at identified hotspots.

“ Police operationalise the information and proceeded to the location. Upon arrival, members encountered three suspects who immediately opened fire and fled the scene.
“ Police returned fire, shooting one of the suspects in the right thigh. He was subsequently arrested while the other two suspects managed to escape. Fortunately, no police member was injured during the exchange of fire,” said Lt-Col Ndubane.
The suspect reportedly faces charges of possessions of gold bearing material, possession of illicit mining equipment, attempted murder, and being in the country illegally.
Lt-Col Ndubane said the suspect was admitted in hospital, under police guard. He was later discharged and is currently in custody.
Major-General Mkhwanazi thanked the public for sharing the information on illegal activities in the area. He also welcomed the arrest.
“ We will ensure that those who engage in such activities, face the full might of the law,” said Major-General Mkhwanazi.
The suspect will reportedly appear before the Sabie Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 17 June 2025, to face the said charges.
