A number of suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms with live ammunition and dagga, during Operation Shanela which was conducted by the South African Police Service(SAPS) in Bushbuckridge on Saturday 24 August.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said the operation mainly focused on problematic areas under the Ehlanzeni District, including Shatale and Marite, to curb the prevalence of illegal firearms and drugs.
“ During the operation, a total of three suspects were apprehended, aged 34 and 40, for possession of unlicensed firearms with ammunition at Shatale and Dwarsloop areas, respectively. Additionally, a 31-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with dealing in dagga in Bushbuckridge,” said Mdhluli.

The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major-General(Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has called on community members to report any suspicious behavior to the police.
“ The safety and security of our communities remain top priority, and these arrests demonstrate our unwavering commitment to combating crime and ensuring that those who engage in illegal activities are brought to justice. Together with community members, we can work towards a safer environment for all,” said Mkhwanazi.
Colonel Mdhluli said the suspects are expected to appear at Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday 26 August.
