The discovery of a newly born baby girl who was reportedly wrapped in a plastic bag and dumped at a sports field, has left the community of Mbuzini in shock.
It is reported that the baby girl, who was still alive, was spotted by children who were playing at the sports field on Sunday at around 15:00. The children are said to have alerted the elders.
According to Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the elders assisted the baby by administering first aid, including the safe cutting of the umbilical cord.
” She was taken to one of the local hospitals for medical attention. Currently the baby is reported to be doing well under the observation of health practitioners,” said Mohlala.
He also said that a case of concealment of birth was registered and police are looking for information that might lead to the arrest of the girl’s mother.
Mpumalanga provincial police commissioner, lieutenant-general Semakaleng Manamela has condemned the incident.
” This month we are supposed to pride ourselves with the best practices by our women,” said Manamela.
