Seventeen officials from the department of public works, roads and transport, in Mpumalanga, were involved in a car accident along the D2943 road between Langeloop and Schoemansdal in Nkomazi local municipality on Monday.
The officials were reportedly traveling to perform their routine road maintenance duties when their midibus collided with a minibus taxi.
Mpumalanga MEC for public works, roads and transport, Mandla Ndlovu, expressed his concern about the incident.
” Our officials are dedicated on ensuring that that our provincial road networks are well maintained. Therefore, it is saddening to receive news that they are hurt on their way to perform their responsibilities,” said Ndlovu.
According to the department, five officials and the minibus taxi driver were admitted in hospital after sustaining injuries, seven officials were examined, while five others were discharged.
The department also stated that MEC Ndlovu wishes a speedy recovery to all who were involved in the accident, as he also appealed to road users to obey the rules of the road.
