A collaborative action by members of the Nelspruit Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation and Lebombo Border Police led to the arrest of a 40 year old foreign national truck driver, on Saturday 4 November, for allegedly contravening the Customs and Excise Act, after he was found in possession of counterfeit goods with an estimated street value of R2 million loaded inside his trailers.
Mpumalanga spokesperson for the Hawks, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said that the suspect contravened the provisions of Section 2(1)(f) read with Sections 1,2(2),10,16,19 and 20 of the Counterfeit Goods Act, 37 of 1997.
” It is alleged that the driver of a Volvo truck was entering the Lebombo Port of Entry, from Mozambique into the Republic of South Africa. The truck and trailers were stopped and searched. The driver was arrested and detained, pending his court appearance,” said Sekgotodi.
She also said that the truck and trailers, along with the reported counterfeit goods were taken to the warehouse of SARS(South Africa Revenue Services) Customs.
” The accused remains in custody and will appear before the Komatipoort magistrate’s court on Monday 6 November,” said Sekgotodi.
