Traditional Healers from all corners of the province attended the launch of the Provincial Traditional Heath Practitioners Forum at Hlazatshe, in Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality, on Monday 7 May.

The launch, which was led by Mpumalanga MEC for the Department of Health-Sasekani Manzini, is regarded as a significant milestone in the collective journey towards embracing tradition, fostering unity and advancing holistic healthcare for all.

Addressing the delegates, Manzini said the launch represents a step forward in recognising the valuable contributions by Traditional Health Practitioners, and a commitment to ensuring holistic and inclusive healthcare for all.

“ The policy on traditional medicine in South Africa marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards recognising and embracing the rich tapestry of healing traditions that make up our healthcare landscape.

“ By formalising the role of Traditional Health Practitioners within our healthcare system, will not only honour the legacy of our ancestors, but also pave the way for a more inclusive and integrated approach to healthcare delivery,” said Manzini.

According to the MEC, the Alma Ata declarations of 1978 was a landmark moment in global health, recognising the vital role of Traditional Health Practitioners in Primary Health Care.

“ Today we build upon that legacy as we embark on the establishment of Traditional Health Practitioners’ governance structures across our province. The 2019 structure term of office has expired and the new team will continue with the work,” she concluded.

The Mpumalanga Traditional Health Practitioners Provincial Structure will be led by Sara Pula(Chairperson), Mduduzi Phakathi(Deputy Chairperson), Mlangeni Leticia(Secretary), Lindiwe Yende(Deputy Secretary), Lillian Sambo(Organiser) and the Additional Members are Fanie Mashaba, Thami Maphanga, December Mthimunye, Ruth Mlambo, Elliot Sgudla, Amelia Maroga and Sonto Nkosi from Civil Society.
