The province of Mpumalanga has joined the entire South Africa in mourning the passing of renowned Christian spiritual leader, motivational speaker, and Pastor Dr. Simon SD Gumbi.
The good Reverend sadly passed away at the age of 66 on Monday evening 14 July 2025, reportedly after a long illness. He was famous for using his influential voice to spread the Gospel, inspiring millions of people on various media platforms.
Many people will remember him by his legendary signature phrase;”U-Amen Usekhona”.
Mpumalanga MEC for DCSR(Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation), Leah Mabuza, described Dr Gumbi as a pillar of Christian faith and a veteran leader of society. Mabuza said Reverend Gumbi was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by DCSR in 2022, during the Mpumalanga Gospel Music Awards(Ingoma) 9th Installment.

According to Mabuza, Reverend Gumbi will be sorely missed for his faith, love, wisdom, hope, and contribution to society.
“ His legacy of kindness, humility, and spiritual leadership will remain in our hearts. To the Gumbi family, please accept our most sincere condolences during this difficult time. May you find comfort in the cherished memories you shared with him and the profound impact he had on many lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you navigate this loss. May you find strength in the love and support of those around you.” said  MEC Mabuza.
The MRM(Mpumalanga Moral Regeneration Movement) also extended words of comfort to the Gumbi family and the Reverend’s followers throughout the province, South Africa, and beyond.
The MRM referred to Dr Gumbi as a seasoned  and trusted ambassador of moral and ethical behaviour. Furthermore, the MRM said his passing has left a great void, as he has successfully impacted the lives of young and old people, with life lessons that will be forever cherished.

“ We wish Bishop Dr SD Gumbi eternal rest and hope that all his teachings both heard and observed will continue to shape the living towards the life of Christ Jesus, a course he dedicated most of his life and lived for. You are living behind a clean and clear message of the cross. Lala ngekuthula Gumbi,” said MRM.

Numerous South African gospel music legends such as Sipho Makhabane, Rebecca Malope, Jabu Hlongwane, to name but a few, have expressed shock and sadness following Dr Gumbi’s passing.
