The R40 Road at Violet Bank in Bushbuckridge has claimed the lives of six men, following a heart-wrenching head-on collision between a bakkie and a sedan on the evening of Saturday 25 May 2024.
According to a statement by Mpumalanga DCSSL(Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison),Moeti Mmusi, four of the deceased were occupants in the sedan, while the fifth victim was a passenger in the bakkie. Mmusi also revealed that the bakkie allegedly hit a pedestrian who died while being transported to the nearby hospital, prior to the head-on collision with the sedan.
“ Five of the deceased perished at the scene. The driver of the Light Delivery Vehicle(bakkie) seemingly lost control and the vehicle went on to crash into a minibus taxi that was travelling on the same road. He was critically injured while several passengers in the minibus taxi sustained injuries ranging from slight to serious. All the injured were rushed to the nearby hospital in the area,” said Mmusi.
The Acting Mpumalanga MEC for DCSSL, Busisiwe Shiba, has called on motorists to be cautious at all times when using the road to reduce the number of deadly crashes.
“ We are saddened by the perpetual deadly crashes on the road. Motorists must help us curb needless loss of lives by obeying the rules and being cautious. Road Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and we must all play our part,” said Shiba.
Mmusi said the investigation into the crash is already under way.
