When 39-year-old Sindy Phindile Matihakoane arrived at Tintswalo Hospital,in Acornhoek, she wasn’t just expecting. She was carrying three.

On 2 May 2026, Matihakoane safely delivered triplets under the care of the hospital’s dedicated multidisciplinary team cited as a rare, high-risk case successfully managed in a rural public healthcare facility.

For Matihakoane, the delivery ward at Tintswalo is familiar ground. She previously gave birth to twins and a singleton at the hospital. Now, she’s a parent of six.

The deliveries reportedly occurred sequentially, with the first infant born at 7:30 and weighing 2,470g, while the two other infants were born at 7:42 and 7:44, weighing 2,530g and 1,790g, respectively.

According to Mpumalanga Department of Health spokesperson, Chris Nobela, triplet pregnancies are frequently associated with preterm delivery between 32 and 34 weeks of gestation.

He said such cases typically require advanced maternal and neonatal intensive care.

The MEC for Health in Mpumalanga, Sasekani Manzini, extended best wishes to the mother and acknowledged the exceptional efforts of the healthcare professionals.

Manzini emphasised that the successful outcome at Tintswalo Hospital demonstrates the facility’s capacity to provide specialised, high-care services in a rural setting.

MEC for Health in Mpumalanga, Ms. Sasekani Manzini, extended best wishes to the moth nd acknowledged the exceptional efforts of the healthcare professionals.

“We are proud that this rare and complex obstetric case was successfully managed in one of our public healthcare facilities. The expertise, dedication, and compassion of our health workers ensured a safe outcome for both mother and infants,”said MEC Manzini.

She added that this achievement, during Workers Month, highlights the diligence and efficiency with which the staff serves the public.

“ It is further evidence of the capability and resilience of our healthcare system, and we celebrate the excellence consistently demonstrated within our facilities,” said MEC Manzini.

For the maternity ward at Tintswalo Hospital, it was another day of work. For the proud mother, Matihakoane, it was the day her family doubled in size safely, and close to home.
