The Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs(DARDLEA) has announced that 8 sweet potato cultivars and two lines that were planted in November 2023 at Nooigedacht Research Farm in Ermelo have been harvested.

The findings will reportedly assist in selecting the best cultivar to be recommended for local farmers in their particular areas.
“ The Sweet Potato Cultivar Evaluation Project is conducted by DARDLEA in collaboration with ARC-VIMP, aimed at evaluating the production potential of sweet potato cultivars in different geographical sites in Mpumalanga,” said DARDLEA in a statement.

DARDLEA also announced that studies are being conducted in Saul Mkhizeville, Greylingstad, Mbombela and Thulamahashe, in addition to the 8 cultivars which have been tested at Nooitgedacht such as Monate, Bleskop, Mvuvhelo, Khumo, Ndou, Bophelo, 199062.1, Beauregard and two new lines of ARC-SP-9 and ARC-SP-5.
