Imagine soaring above the iconic Blyde River Canyon, Africa’s greenest canyon, with the world dropping away beneath you. That vision took a step closer to reality with the recent Mariepskop Aerial Cableway Feasibility Study workshop held at Forever Resort, Swadini, led by Mpumalanga DEDT (Department of Economic Development and Tourism).
According to DEDT, the workshop was held in collaboration with the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, and it hosted primary stakeholders.

and all the primary stakeholders have reportedly embraced the project with eagerness.
“The workshop served as a critical platform that seeks to examine the technical, environmental, social, financial and institutional dimensions of the proposed project and to also meaningfully engage primary stakeholders,” said DEDT.
Mpumalanga Director for Tourism, J Mdluli, reportedly set the tone for the deliberations, stating that the concept represents more than a cableway, it is a statement affirming that transformation and high-value tourism can rise together.
Mdluli called for openness and good governance, furthermore, stating that the concept gives DEDT and stakeholders a platform to explore how Mpumalanga can strengthen its tourism economy, attract responsible investment, expand visitor experiences and create inclusive economic opportunities for surrounding communities.
“The Department remains committed to transparent governance, responsible tourism development and partnerships that advance inclusive growth. Together, we can determine the best path forward for Mariepskop, the Blyde River Canyon landscape and the people of Mpumalanga. Therefore, I encourage all stakeholders to participate openly and constructively,” said Mdluli.
The Mariepskop Cableway is perceived by DEDT as a groundbreaking idea that carries the great potential to unlock new inclusive jobs, opportunities for SMMEs (Small Micro and Medium Enterprises), positioning Bushbuckridge as one of the world-class, responsible adventure destinations offered by The Place of the Rising Sun.
