The re-reopening of Exxaro’s New Matla Resources Coal Mine in Kriel, within Nkangala District, was hailed by Mpumalanga Premier, Mandla Ndlovu, as more than an investment milestone, but a renewed economic activity in a region heavily dependent on mining, and a chance to strengthen livelihoods in surrounding communities.

Premier Ndlovu joined the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe, Deputy Minister Phumzile Mgcina, Mpumalanga MEC for DEDT(Department of Economic Development and Tourism) Jesta Sidell, Emalahleni Mayor, Vusi Nhlapho, as well as Nkangala District Speaker, Mduduzi Nkosi, for the official re-opening ceremony.

“ This landmark investment marks a significant step toward economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development in Mpumalanga. The mine will play an important role in reducing unemployment, stimulating local economic activity, and strengthening the province’s economy,” said Premier Ndlovu.

According to the Premier Ndlovu, the official opening of Exxaro’s New Matla Resources Coal Mine carried personal weight, serving as a return to where his working life began. Mantashe reportedly worked underground at the same mine 43-years ago.

Exxaro reportedly honoured the minister during the ceremony for his contribution to the mine’s transformation over the years, changes that helped shape the operation being launched today.
