Mpumalanga Premier, Mandla Ndlovu, visited Witbank Hospital on Christmas Day to congratulate babies born during the early hours of 25 December 2025.
Accompanied by MEC for Health, Sasekani Manzini, Councillors, and Head of Department, Dr. Lucas Ndlovu, the Premier handed over gifts to four newborn babies at the hospital.

A total of 171 babies were reportedly delivered across Mpumalanga Department of Health facilities between 12 and 6 am on Christmas Day, with the first 2025 Christmas baby born in Tonga Hospital under Ehlanzeni District at 00h02.

“ Ehlanzeni District recorded the highest number of deliveries, with 71, followed by Gert Sibande with 52 and Nkangala with the lowest number of deliveries at 48. Gert Sibande experienced the highest number of twin deliveries, with two sets of twins delivered in Evander and Ermelo Hospitals, followed by Nkangala with one set from Witbank Hospital, while no twin deliveries were reported at Ehlanzeni District.

“ Gert Sibande was the only district that reported Born Before Arrival (BBAs), the two from Carolina Hospital and Balfour Community Health Centre (CHC), whereas no Born before (BBAs) were reported for Ehlanzeni and Nkangala District. Nkangala District reported a stillbirth weighing 705g from Waterval CHC in Dr JS Moroka, with no stillbirths reported in the other two districts,” said the Department of Health.

A concern was raised regarding the number of teenage deliveries of mothers under the age of 19. These cases will reportedly be referred to the Department of Social Development for further investigation.

“ Ehlanzeni recorded the highest number of under 19 years teenage deliveries, with 12, followed by Nkangala with 7 and Gert Sibande with 6, and cases of mothers aged 16 and below were reported at Mammetlhake, Witbank, and Standerton hospitals.

“ Two 15-year-old teenage mothers from Witbank and Mammetlhake Hospital and two 16-year-olds from Mammetlhake and Standerton hospitals were reported,” said the Department of Health.
