A total of 171 babies were reportedly delivered across Mpumalanga Department of Health facilities between 12 and 6 am on Christmas Day, with the first 2025 Christmas baby born in Tonga Hospital under Ehlanzeni District at 00h02.
“ Gert Sibande was the only district that reported Born Before Arrival (BBAs), the two from Carolina Hospital and Balfour Community Health Centre (CHC), whereas no Born before (BBAs) were reported for Ehlanzeni and Nkangala District. Nkangala District reported a stillbirth weighing 705g from Waterval CHC in Dr JS Moroka, with no stillbirths reported in the other two districts,” said the Department of Health.

“ Ehlanzeni recorded the highest number of under 19 years teenage deliveries, with 12, followed by Nkangala with 7 and Gert Sibande with 6, and cases of mothers aged 16 and below were reported at Mammetlhake, Witbank, and Standerton hospitals.
“ Two 15-year-old teenage mothers from Witbank and Mammetlhake Hospital and two 16-year-olds from Mammetlhake and Standerton hospitals were reported,” said the Department of Health.
