The MEC for DCSSL(Community Safety, Security and Liaison) in Mpumalanga, Jackie Macie, is calling upon motorists to obey the rules of the road and avoid the unnecessary loss of life during the long weekend as South Africans prepare to commemorate Human Rights Day on Friday 21 March 2025.
As the country enters the Autumn season, Macie reminded motorists that it gets darker earlier, and therefore, travellers should plan their trips to travel during daylight hours. He also advised road users to adjust their driving according to prevailing weather and road conditions.
“ Our law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel will be on high alert to respond to any situation, however, despite the plans that we put in place and activations, road safety remains the responsibility of everyone,” said the MEC.
He called on long-distance drivers to ensure that their vehicles are road worthy before commencing with their journeys and he also insisted that they must rest sufficiently along the way.
“ We must all play our part by driving responsibly and respect other road users. Dangerous overtaking, texting while driving, excessive speeding and drunk driving must be avoided as these directly infringe on other people’s rights to life,” said Macie.
