Six suspects were reportedly caught red-handed while allegedly stealing copper and chrome in Bethal on Wednesday 28 August.
The suspects allegedly tried to flee the scene in Toyota Avanza after noticing private security personnel approaching, but they were later cornered and apprehended.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said the suspect drove towards Standerton during their attempt to escape but a collaborative effort by members of the South African Police Service(SAPS) and private security secured their arrest.
“ Some of the stolen properties were recovered during their arrest. Further investigation will be conducted to ascertain if there were no other properties concealed somewhere and to verify the status of the vehicle used in the commision of the crime,” said Mdhluli.
The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major-General(Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, said the arrest should serve an indication to other criminals that crime will not be tolerated in the Province.
