The success of a piggery business called Pigro project owned by Poppy Eva Nkosi(32) in Mashishing, received praises from members of the Mpumalanga legislature and attributed its sustainability to the collaboration between DARDLEA(department of agriculture, rural development, land and environmental affairs), OTP(office of the premier), MEGA, and Dikwanyane CPA. This was revealed during an oversight visit conducted at Pigro project by members of the provincial legislature.
In a statement released by DARDLEA, an oversight was conducted when the project started in 2018 and it only had 5 indigenous pigs. Currently, Pigro reportedly operates on a smallholder level, selling to the local Lydenburg abattoir and Meat King butchery in Burgersfort.
” Pigro project was funded through the PYDF(premier youth development fund) to build a piggery structure, purchase equipment and to finance working capital. Poppy then expanded it when she received 11 Camborough pigs(1 boar and 10 sows), feed and medication through Masibuyele Esibayeni programme last year. She employs three workers,” said DARDLEA in a statement.
The oversight visit by DARDLEA forms part of a programme by Mpumalanga provincial government called TLP(taking the legislature to the people).
