MEC for Mpumalanga DARDLEA(Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs), Khethiwe Moeketsi, has made a special calling upon pet owners to join the global community in commemorating World Rabies Day by getting their dogs and cats vaccinated to protect both humans and animals against the deadly disease.

Moeketsi said World Rabies Day, commemorated annually on 28 September, is dedicated towards raising awareness and strengthening the collective commitment to end human deaths from the deadly but preventable disease.

She said the theme for this year’s World Rabbies Day is; “Act Now! You, Me, Community”.

The disease is said to be continuously claiming thousands of lives every year, mostly in Africa and Asia. The sad part is that most of the deaths are reportedly affecting children.

“Rabies has no cure, but it is 100% preventable through vaccinating our pets and seeking urgent medical care in case of any bite from a dog, or scratch from a cat. As government, we are committed to ending rabies by strengthening vaccination campaigns and raising community awareness. But success depends on all of us. Let us all get our dogs and cats vaccinated but also report any suspected rabies cases,” said Moeketsi.

The MEC cautioned; “Once symptoms appear, rabies has no cure. That is why prevention through vaccination is the strongest weapon. Vaccinating dogs and cats, seeking immediate treatment after animal bites, and educating communities are the keys to saving lives”.

Key Steps to Prevent Rabies

– Vaccinate Your Pets: Regular vaccination of dogs and cats is crucial in preventing the spread of rabies.

– Seek Immediate Medical Care: After an animal bite or scratch, prompt medical attention can prevent the development of rabies.

– Report Suspected Cases: Community awareness and reporting of suspected rabies cases are vital in controlling the disease.
