The Mpumalanga DPWRT(Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport) has successfully completed the reconstruction of a new in-situ bridge structure on the P177 road between Carolina and Chrissiesmeer.

The road was previously closed due to the collapse of the old corrugated metal culvert bridge, which necessitated urgent intervention.
The official reopening ceremony was led by Mpumalanga MEC for DPWRT, Thulasizwe Thomo, despite heavy rainfall, in the presence of the Executive Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality, Walter Mngomezulu, and local councillors.
According to DPWRT, the new bridge is part of the Provincial Culvert Bridge Replacement Programme, designed to enhance the province’s road infrastructure network.
“ The reconstruction of the bridge was prioritised to ensure timely delivery and restore connectivity between the affected areas. This road plays a critical role in linking Msukaligwa Local Municipality and Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality,” said the DPWRT.
The new bridge has been reportedly designed to be more durable and stable, ensuring long-term functionality and safety for road users.
MEC Thomo was pleased to announce the reopening of the road.
“ We are proud of this achievement and remain committed to enhancing our province’s road infrastructure network for the benefit of all communities,” said Thomo.
