Issues of health amongst a number of old people within the continent has always been a serious concern.

The Department of social development’s mission has always been to dispel the myth that senior citizens are a burden to society and that they are mere consumers of services.

The department of social services in Mpumalanga is expected to hold an event under the theme  “Active Ageing” which is expected to take place at Badplaas Aventura Holiday Resort on 11th to 12th November 2021.

The prime focus of the programme is acknowledging the wealth of knowledge, skills and potential that older persons possess. It is also aimed at dispelling the myth that older persons are simply consumers of services, a burden to society and have nothing to contribute to the broader society.

The departments also want to deal with societal attitudes towards ageing that are predominately negative. Common amongst those is that elderly persons are physically weak, forgetful, stubborn and selfish.

In the event that will be held, older persons from across the province are expected to engage in non-physical contact activities which include beauty contests and sporting activities with the guidance and support from the Department and various other stakeholders.

Often, older persons are deprived of the opportunity of enjoying their golden years as they are often expected to take care of their grandchildren who are either orphaned and or without any form of assistance.

The programme is implemented in collaboration with the Office of the Premier, Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation, the Department of Health and the Albert Luthuli Local Municipality.
