Caption: Premier Ndlovu confident that the Commission will assist in resolving disputes

The stability of Traditional Leadership in Mpumalanga is said to be under threat. This is reportedly due to allegations of illegal acquisition of land stemming from disputes for areas of jurisdiction among Traditional Councils.
As a result, the Premier of Mpumalanga, Mandla Ndlovu, has appointed a Commission of Enquiry which is tasked with investigating and resolving the disputes amongst Traditional Councils regarding areas of jurisdiction.
According to the spokesperson in the Office of the Premier(OTP), George Mthethwa, the Commission is appointed with effect from 1 August 2024 and is expected to submit a report to the Premier for consideration, on or before 30 November this year, upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Mthethwa said the scope of the Commission includes verification of legal documents.
Premier Ndlovu said the affected Traditional Councils must be consulted, by the Commission, to source evidence that is required to formulate the findings.
“ The terms of reference include amongst others, investigating all allegations pertaining to the original proclaimed areas of jurisdiction in the province, conduct hearings or consultations with affected Senior Traditional Leaders,” said Ndlovu.
According to the Premier, the recommended interventions to be implemented by the Provincial Government must be clearly indicated on the report, in order to address the shortcomings, transgressions, non-compliance with legislation and other challenges identified during the course of the investigation.
“ It will be expected of the Commission that to make firm and unambiguous recommendations in this report, as far as each and every finding is concerned. Any further findings which are brought to the attention of the Commission should also be included in the report, as a separate and concise part thereof,” Ndlovu concluded.
