Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison(DCSSL) alongside various stakeholders such as the Departments of Transport, Home Affairs and South African Police Service(SAPS), conducted a roadblock on the R23 Road in Standerton-Lekwa Local Municipality, on Friday, as part of commemorating October Transport Month.

In a statement released by DCSSL, the R23 Road is one of the busiest roads that connect the provinces of Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Kwazulu-Natal, carrying large volumes of traffic on long weekends and peak holiday seasons. The department furthermore stated that a number of accidents were reported on the route in previous holiday seasons.

” Transport Month is observed annually since 2005. It is during this month that the Department of Transport and its entities will showcase transport infrastructure services in a nation, maritime, public transport and roads. This month will also be used to further advance the country’s road safety initiatives, while also creating awareness of the economic benefits of the sector,” said DCSSL.

In addition, DCSSL said that motorists who did not comply with the rules of the road were not only issues with summonses, but they were also given road safety tips by Road Safety Education officials from the department.

Another campaign was reportedly held along the Ngodwana Weighbridge N4 Toll Road, outside of Nelspruit, aimed at educating truck drivers about the dangers of speeding, heavy loads and the importance of resting when driving long distances.

DCSSL said, in a statement, that some of the crashes reported on Mpumalanga roads are caused by overloaded trucks carrying goods and mini buses carrying passengers.
