Members of the national council of provinces(NCOP), led by chairperson Jomo Nyambi, paid a week-long visit to Mpumalanga conducting oversight on a number of social housing projects in various municipalities within the province.
Amongst other issues, Nyambi and his delegation was reportedly briefed on Willow Creek social housing project in Ermelo-Msukaligwa local municipality, which is said to be currently put on hold.
According to a statement by the department of human settlements in Mpumalanga, NCOP members called for MinMec(the department’s coordinating structure) to consider a serious policy review and alignment on the implementation of social housing projects.
Nyambi said that the visit was an eye-opener, as it has revealed that pertinent impediments can be resolved if all stakeholders come under one roof.
” It would be good for people like us that are in charge when it comes to lawmaking, public participation and oversight, to extend an invitation to the national minister, the provincial MEC and the municipality leadership, so that we can make sense and have a better understanding of the challenges faced by the provincial government and the local government in terms of the reporting lines, especially those stakeholders that are reporting direct to the minister, who happen to have serious good projects that can assist us moving forward,” said Nyambi.
